WALK IN UNITY

By Jemima Rayan

The Bible talks to us about walking in unity. God has fashioned us in such a way that we have unity in diversity. He made us different yet wants us to function in peace. No two individuals are alike. We may be different in many aspects but we have one God. Unity is the basic characteristic of the Godhead. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit function in unity. God created the heavens and the earth to function in perfect and profound harmony.

We read in Colossians 1:16 and 17, " For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist."

Whatever God created is designed to work together in unity. The stars in the sky work in perfect agreement. The Sun and the moon work in unity. God made everything and each one was designed to function in oneness.

There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in you all" (Ephesians 4: 4-6)

That is why the Bible instructs us to do everything in the name of Jesus. So there will be a common reason to glorify His name. In everything, God wants us to reveal His nature. This can happen when we abide in Jesus for He is the unifying force behind every creature and creation.

The work of the enemy is to cause division and disunity. The devil always tries to device schemes that are against the work of God. The Lord is always advancing us towards harmony and unity. The enemy’s most basic strategy against us is to bring division.

We read in Jude 19, "These are sensual persons who cause divisions, not having the Spirit."

Jesus said in Matthew 10:34-36, "Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. "For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man's enemies will be the members of his household.

We have to understand what Jesus meant when He mentioned the word 'sword'. The Lord will sometimes bring about temporary disharmony so He can bring ultimate harmony, because ultimate unity and peace requires pulling down evil strongholds and fortresses that exalt themselves against the knowledge of God.

The enemy will use a sugar coated situation to bring about a much more devastating division later. The devil has people that have an appearance of unity. However, we can always discern if something is from God or not.

James 4:17 and 18 says, "But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace." As we move toward the goal of being Christ formed in us, we will always find more unity, harmony, and peace within us. That peace within us flows to the others that we come in contact with. Sometimes, our unity with God may create discord with those who do not serve Him. The greatest harmony and peace that we can ever know is when we are one with Christ. If we abide in Him we will sow the seeds of unity everywhere we go.

Paul exhorts in I Corinthians 1:10, “Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree, and there be no divisions among you, but you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment.”

The Bible says that we must be aware of the people who cause division. Stay away from them! Do not associate with them. " Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned and avoid them” (Romans 16:17) so as not to associate with them. Those whose works cause divisions instead of unity are walking away from the will of God. We need to ask God to give us discernment to do the right thing and it is God who orders our steps.

May the Lord help us live in unity in Jesus' name.
