BE HUMBLE
By Jemima Rayan
Humility is an attitude and not
a deed. The Lord Jesus is a perfect example for 'humility'. He
humbled Himself and took the form of a bond servant, and came
in the likeness of men (Phil 2:5). That is humility. Jesus identified
Himself with the poor, sick and the suffering. He went to the
home of a leper. He humbled Himself. And Jesus said, "Follow
me". We need to follow the humility of Jesus.
1. Humility is a commandment:
It is amazing to note that the
Bible compares humility to clothes. Clothes are a bare necessity
for us. In fact we like to wear good clothes. In the same way,
we need humility for the inner man. It is very essential. God
wants us to be humble. We do not have a choice there. God has
commander His children to humble themselves before the Lord. Humility
can be expressed by submission to one another.
Jas 4:10 says, 'Humble yourself
in the sight of the Lord and He will lift you up"
1 Pet 5:5 says, 'Likewise you
younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of
you be submissive to one another and be clothed with humility'.
2. Grace to the Humble:
The Lord looks at the humble.
Every time we humble ourselves, we position ourselves to receive
God's grace and blessing. We all want to be blessed of God. It
will be easy for God to lift us up when He finds us humble. The
following verses talk about how God can bless us when we are humble.
We become recipients of His grace automatically if we have humility.
Jas 4:6 says, 'But He gives more
grace. Therefore He says: God resists the proud, But gives grace
to the humble.
Ps 138:6 says, 'Though the Lord
is on high, Yet He regards the lowly; But the proud He knows from
afar'.
Lk 14:11, 'For whoever exalts
himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted'.
3. Riches, Honor and Life to
the Humble:
God dwells with him who has a
humble spirit. When He sees you humble, he will come and dwell
with you before you ask Him to. Not only that, He revives your
spirit. Isn't that good!
Is 57:15, 'For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity,
whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, With him
who has a contrite and humble spirit, To revive the spirit of
the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones'.
Pro 22:4, 'By humility and the
fear of the Lord, Are riches and honor and life'.
Pro 29:23, 'A man's pride will
bring him low, But the humble in spirit will retain honor'.
In the Bible, the blessings are
conditional. .We always pray for God to bless us with riches and
honor because in life, riches and honor are needed. These blessings
are promised for the humble. We cannot please God just by our
words. God sees our heart. He knows our intention and he knows
where our heart is.
Let us humble ourselves in the
sight of our God. Let Him see us as His humble children. Let us
not forget what the Lord has done for us. It is He who lives in
us. It is the Lord who works through us. We are where we are by
His grace and His grace alone. It is the Lord who gives grace,
riches and honor. Praise God.
May the Lord find us humble
in His sight. Amen
